30 for 30: Day Three

It's worth remembering that none of this happens without my trusty spreadsheet.  I've tried to plan my 30 outfits, not down to the last detail but so I don't wear the same outfit twice.

And also so I remember...absolutely NO SHOPPING!

I actually have decent pictures today!

Skirt: ASOS, T-shirt: New Look, Wedges: Marks and Spencer, Bag: Fossil, Necklaces: Accessorise

I'm still trying to break these bastards in, the leather heel bit where it meets the strap just loves to rub!

30 for 30: Day Two

Dress: TK Maxx, Shoes: Nine West, Necklace: Forever 21

You can't see the print very well because of the backlight but it's quite Erdem-esque.  I love the cut of this shift dress and I'm keeping my eyes peeled for more like it.  Nipped in waist and pockets - so easy to throw on for work.

Don't worry - I managed to get home early enough to catch Peter and he's taken pics for day 3.  No work loo background! ;)

30 for 30: Day One

So day one...as I mentioned in my previous post, outfit posts during the week are going to have to be self-taken at work but you get the idea.

Lace print dress - Dorothy Perkins, long cardi - New Look, Peep toe wedges - Nine West

30 for 30: Summer Edition

It's been a while since I've completed a 30 for 30 challenge. I've got a few holidays coming up where I can wear casual rather than work clothes so I thought this was a great time to start!

Recently I've been feeling a little disillusioned with my blog. A run of busy events at work plus not having a decent camera to hand has meant that my outfit posts have been sporadic at best but as long as you lot don't mind self-taken pics on days I'm at work then it's all good.

Follow the link for a full explanation of 30 for 30.

This time I've chosen 28 items of clothing and allowed myself two wild cards - mainly because of this changeable British weather but also because I'm bound to get bored with my 28 items. As with previous 30 for 30 challenges there will also be a spending ban in place. I haven't managed to stick to this in my last two attempts but I must do it this time!

So here are my items:

Tops
Roxy Music vest - Primark, black ribbon vest - Topshop, chiffon top - F21, black and white tee's - New Look, white cotton top - River Island, Flower print tee - Mary Katrantzou for Topshop, Black chiffon shirt - F21

Bottoms
Floral trousers - ASOS, Straight jeans -GAP, black cropped trousers - Oasis, green skirt - ASOS, black skirt - GAP, pink shorts - Topshop, dip dye shorts and denim shorts - both H&M

Dresses

Cardi's
Black and cream long cardigans - both New Look, coral cardigan - Zara

Shoes
Glitter flats - Carvela, Peep toe wedges - Nine West (not pictured), leopard heels - Banana Republic, tan wedges - M&S, white trainers - Converse

Wish me luck and let me know if you're doing or have done a 30 for 30 recently, I'd love to get more remix inspiration!

Beauty // Nails // Thakoon for Nars

I recently purchase a couple of Thakoon for Nars nail polishes.  Being a Nars nail polish virgin, I didn't know what to expect but I'm impressed with the colours from this range and I'm tempted to buy some more.

First I tried Kutki, a pale turquoise blue.  This is how it looked with one coat:

I had to put three coats on in total to get the depth but the end result was great.  This is probably one of my favourite nail polishes now.

I also tried Amchoor, a canary yellow.  I have a few yellow polishes but have been disappointed by how they look on.  Sometimes they are too washed out, or can look a bit gunky.  This was Amchoor after one coat:

As you can see, after two coats it's a much deeper yellow, nice and bright.  I think this would work well on toes in particular.

Other Thakoon for Nars polishes in this range are below:

Carry On Packing

This summer I'm going on two long weekend adventures, the first is a weekend to France which will involve sitting on the beach or by the pool, and a few nights out in the local town.  The second is slightly longer and is a city and beach break in Italy - more tricky to pack light for but I'm up for a challenge!

As I'm flying with Easyjet (a budget airline who make you pay extra to check luggage).  I wanted to get a decent carry on suitcase that wouldn't break the bank.  I'd been looking at this Berghaus one for a while after reading some good reviews on Amazon and found it half price on Field and Trek.

Berghaus Optimus 40 bag, £35

Now I have never been one to pack light, but I was surprised that I was able to do this once before on my trip to Berlin, so I'm convinced I can do it again - bring it on!

First things first, when you're taking carry on most budget airlines won't let ladies take a separate handbag (I've seen this go both ways, it's really at the person at the gates discretion).  With this in mind and seeing as I'll need to get more use out of any potential handbag I'm going with a simple tan clutch.  The one I have is from Fossil and is a good size.  It can fit all of these items below in it and can slot in the front compartment of the case.

Clutch - Mulberry £475;Kindle - Amazon £149; Earphones - Nixon £35; iPhone - Apple £various, Wallet - Marc by Marc Jacobs - £195; Passport cover - Mulberry - £100; Moisture surge face spray - Clinique £18.50; Erica sunglasses - Ray-Ban $109

So you have all of the items that you'll need immediately.  On top of this I usually buy a magazine at the airport but again, this could slip into the case (look how much I'm planning on 'slipping in the case' already).  All you really need to carry are your passport, tickets and money.  Kindle and iPhone for entertainment on the plane, face spray for inflight moisturising and sunglasses for landing and looking fabulous at the other end!

So onto the main event.  What do you take when you haven't got much space?  I find what takes up the most space in my case (apart from shoes) is toiletries.  If you're staying in a nice hotel where shampoo, conditioner, soap, body lotion etc are provided then great but if you're staying in an apartment or a hotel where those things will probably not be included then you'll need to bring your own.  Firstly, I would get yourself some travel bottles - you cannot carry on bottles with over 50ml of liquid so that's your biggest container.  Saying that, you can carry as much as you like as long as you put it in see through plastic bags to be checked at security.

I decant my shampoo, conditioner and shower gel into these bottles.  My face moisturiser is usually a 50ml container so I don't need to worry about that.  Ordinarily I would take my travel sized cleanser and toner but space is all important so this time I'm opting for face wipes.  Another plus is that these have multiple uses (great for freshening up) and although aren't great for long term use, it's only a few days so your skin can probably cope!

Lipstick in Flamingo - Tom Ford £36; BB Cream - Clinique, £25; Bronzer/Blusher - Nars £33; Eyeshadow palette - Dior £41; Double Fix Mascara - Clarins £17; Kutki Nail Polish - Thakoon for Nars £14; SPF 50 sunscreen - Target $7.44; Face wipes - Topshop £2.50; Travel bottle set - John Lewis £6.50

I don't personally wear less than spf 50 on my face when I'm on holiday.  Whenever I'm in the states I stock up on the Coppertone stuff, it isn't too thick and is good for sensitive skin.  When selecting my holiday makeup I try and go for palettes, blusher/bronzer palettes are great and there are some lovely summer eyeshadow palettes around at the moment.  Alternatively, you could make your own at MAC stores.  I also really like this Clarins mascara.  You can wear it over your own mascara to make it waterproof, or on its own.  You may notice the lack of suncream - you can't pack a full sized tube but you can buy it at the airport, ok it'll be a bit more expensive but it solves your problem and I'll probably get through a bottle between Peter and I.  (As it's for both of us, in his hand luggage it goes...)

Now onto clothes.  Ideally I think about what items can double up.  If you're going out on an evening you're really only wearing those clothes for a few hours, that top for example can easily be worn during the day the next day.  Also take into account what you can wear on the plane journey.  I usually wear my heaviest/biggest shoes so they aren't taking up space in my case.  I'll also bring a scarf or wrap as these are great for the cooler evenings.

On The Plane... Bag - as before; Wedges - Marks and Spencer £49.50; Scarf -Mercy Delta £155
Day Wear Aztec Print - River Island £12; Woven - H&M £13; Beach Bum - Wildfox $55; Dip dye shorts - New Look £19.99
On The Beach Pink bikini top, Pink bikini bottoms, Black bikini bottoms - H&M; Kaftan - Missoni £545; Sarong - Matthew Williamson £165; Tote - Marc by Marc Jacobs $68
Evenings Out Crop top - Bank £15; Blue vest - New Look £14.99; Floral shorts - Topshop £35
Footwear Sparkle flats - Carvela £75; Flip flops - Havaianas £14; Trainers - Converse £45

So you have your day wear, this could be for going to and from the beach or walking around town depending on the type of holiday you're going on.  For the beach, I like kaftan's - this Missoni one is particularly gorgeous, but equally you could wear this with the shorts.  Mix it up!

I love these floral shorts from Topshop, they are smart for evening wear and would look great with the black crop top - not that I'm a crop top kind of girl but hey...

Footwear, you already have the wedges which were worn on the plane - to save space in your case.  I love the sparkly flats because they are casual but can be dressed up.  The black flip flops are essential for the beach and take up no room, and if you're planning on doing any amount of walking then you need a pair of shoes that offer some support.  Nothing worse than getting blisters from walking too much in flip flops...

So ideally, this is all going to fit into my cabin sized case - wish me luck!

I suppose if all else fails I can sneak another pair of shoes into Peter's case... ;)

Beauty // Vita Liberata - Self-Tan For Sensitive Types

My search for a self-tan that doesn't make my sensitive skin react is over.  I picked up some Vita Liberata self-tanning mousse when it was on offer in Boots recently.  I was drawn to it because the ingredients are 80% organic and it promised none of that biscuity fake tan smell.

The first time I used the mousse I didn't have a mitt so while it didn't streak, it was a bit patchy in places.  As soon as I bought the mitt for my second application I was a convert.  The medium colour is perfect for me as I still have my winter pallor, having not seen the sun since August last year.  It goes on easily with the mitt and is tinted so you can see where it's going.  Compared with St Tropez there is only a faint smell, but nothing overly biscuity.

My tips for using self-tan

Pick a shade that suits you  Self-tan can be expensive and it's tempting to go for the darkest shade to avoid buying twice, but be honest with yourself - is it going to suit your skin tone? and most importantly is it going to look obvious?  If the answer is yes, personally I don't think you want it.

Preparation is key  I've tried scrub upon scrub to get my skin smooth, but for me the best results come from using these scrub gloves from Soap and Glory and normal shower gel (I use Sanex or Simple).

Application Towel dry and apply a generous amount of body moisturiser to your hands.  Although you're applying the self-tan with a mitt, this acts as an additional barrier.  Use the excess cream to run over your dry patches - elbows, knees and heels.  This will prevent patchiness in those problem areas.

I tend to use two pumps of mousse for each body part; each arm, each leg, front and back.  Using an arm as an example, I use the mitt to sweep the mousse towards my shoulder all around the arm and then buff so there are no streaks.  This method has given me great results.

Post-tanning Wash your hands thoroughly, being careful to avoid splash back on your forearms which can result in white patches.  Once your hands are dry, get a dab of self-tan on a cotton pad and sweep this lightly over the back of each hand.  I sometimes don't bother with this step if it's the first time I'm using self-tan for a while, but as you build the colour up you may want to.

Finish Wait 5/10 minutes then wear loose clothing, preferably no bra and definitely no socks.  I usually do my self-tanning before bed so it can develop overnight.  The next morning, shower as usual and pat yourself dry then apply moisturiser.  Voila!

Have you got any tips for streak proof tanning?  Have you found any great self-tan products?
